The Yangtze is the largest and longest river in China and undoubtedly one of the most spectacular waterways in the world. It flows through no fewer than 11 provinces and numerous major cities on its 4,000-mile journey from its source in Qinghai Province, eastwards through the Tibetan Plateau to the East China Sea at Shanghai, offering an abundance of opportunities for sightseeing and exploration.

Experience authentic Chinese culture and cuisine in a plethora of destinations along this mighty waterway, from the world-famous cities of Beijing and Shanghai, where ancient landmarks and soaring modern skyscrapers combine to create a unique and unforgettable setting, to the stunning areas of natural beauty and quaint towns situated along the banks of this iconic river.

China’s bustling and vibrant capital city, Beijing is almost always featured on Yangtze river cruise itineraries and, as one of China’s most prominent and illustrious metropolises, visitors will find plenty to see and do here. The city offers a truly spell-binding collection of ancient landmarks to uncover, perfect for history lovers. From the beautiful Forbidden City and the poignant Tiananmen Square to the world-famous Great Wall of China, to which excursions operate from the city, there is simply so much to see across Beijing.

While the city’s historic side is truly captivating, Beijing also has plenty of busy modern districts to explore and it is highly recommended that visitors experience the thrill of haggling for goods on a bustling Beijing market as well as sampling some authentic local Chinese cuisine in one of many excellent local restaurants and cafes.

Located at the mouth of the Yangtze River, Shanghai is one of China’s most famous and populous cities, offerings a wonderful blend of historic and contemporary culture. Towering modern structures stand side by side with beautiful temples and the city’s recent architecture is equally as impressive as its ancient buildings. A guided tour of the city is one of the best ways to appreciate all that Shanghai has to offer on a single visit.

Shanghai is also well-known for its stunning parks and gardens, including the gorgeous Yuyuan Garden which boasts an array of colourful plant life alongside classic Chinese design. The city’s many museums also offer an insight into fascinating Chinese heritage, while attractions such as Shanghai Happy Valley, Jinjiang Amusement Park and Shanghai City Beach offer something for everyone to enjoy.

Three Gorges

One of the most impressive locations on a Yangtze River cruise is surely the incredible Three Gorges, which include Qutang, Wuxia and Xiling, where visitors will be in awe of their amazing surroundings as they sail along one of the most scenic stretches of this majestic river.

This iconic area boasts serene and tranquil yet incredibly dramatic landscape and is often regarded as the birthplace of legends. Here, the mighty Yangtze carves out grand canyons across lush and craggy mountains, leaving bizarre rock formations, crystal clear waterfalls and hanging caves rich in avian wildlife, providing visitors with a truly enchanting and utterly unforgettable experience.
