Perhaps you’ve enjoyed an ocean voyage on a cruise ship before and are trying out a river cruise for something different. Maybe your river voyage is your first ever foray into the world of cruising. Either way, there are a few things you need to know about what to take with you. Here’s my list of top things to pack on a river cruise and a few things you should leave behind, too.
Strong walking shoes
A good pair of strong walking shoes or boots should be on top of everyone’s list of top things to pack on a river cruise. The whole point of river cruising is exploring the towns and cities you’ll visit and you’ll enjoy it much more if you’re firm on your feet.
A camera (with plenty of memory)
Obvious maybe, but essential nonetheless. There’s so much to see on a river cruise. As well as the passing scenery such as the beautiful Rhine Valley, you’ll want to capture the sights of each place you visit. If you’ve ever been on a city break, you’ll know how many pictures you take. Multiply that about eight times and you’ll have some idea of why a camera’s so essential.
Sun Glasses
No good visiting all these places if you have to squint to take it all in. Reading a good novel on the al fresco dining or sun deck on a Douro Cruise is made much more pleasant with the help of a pair of sunglasses, too.
A light waterproof
OK, so you’re not likely to encounter as much rain as we do here in the UK but on misty mornings a lightweight waterproof comes in handy. It’s better to have a roll-up waterproof in your bag in case your port for the day falls victim to sudden downpour, too.
A Fleece
Layers are the key. A fleece is great because it’s warm enough to keep the chill off but won’t take nearly as much room in your luggage. If it gets too warm, just take it off and tie it round your waist.
Sunscreen
Don’t be fooled. Just because you won’t see many beaches on your cruise down the Danube, it doesn’t mean the sun won’t be out. Even on moderate days the sun can prove harmful to sensitive skin. Of course, if you’re enjoying the beauty of Southern France, it’s essential.
Cap or hat
A hat is obviously great for keeping the sun off your head, especially if your days of an abundant barnet are mostly behind you. Similarly, it’s great for keeping your head warm on chilly mornings too. (It also comes in handy for bad hair days).
Rucksack
Instead of packing everything into a suitcase, you could opt for a rucksack. Providing it’s not too bulky, it’ll double as a handy way of taking your essentials with you on your port excursion.
European plug adaptor
Another item which should certainly be on your list of top things to pack on a river cruise. No good taking your camera, its accompanying charger and your mobile phone if you’ve no means to charge them.
Non-wrinkle top
River voyages are not really about tuxedo and ball gown formal nights. Nevertheless, there are a few formal evenings when you can dine with the captain. For these, a non-wrinkle top which is smart would make for an ideal quick-change item which will take up a lot less room than a suit.
Don’t forget
To get to your embarkation port you’ll most likely be flying. Obviously, this means your passport and any other associated travel documents, and the all-important clear bag for any liquids you may need to take with you.
Leave behind
Shoes/heels, tie, heavy coat.
