Dutch Waterway River Cruises

Strolling through blankets of brightly coloured flowers in bloom in Keukenhof; steadily passing windmills as you gently cycle tranquil countryside landscapes; curling up under a blanket on the balcony of your cabin with a hot chocolate after a day of wondering Christmas markets.  The images that a Dutch Waterway River cruise evokes will ignite dormant wanderlust.  Discover the iconic cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Antwerp, as well as the fairy-tale city of Ghent all whilst sailing with our most popular cruise lines.

Itineraries are available throughout the year, with the months of late March to May being considered the prime season for when the bulb-fields are at their best.  However, the autumn and winter months of October to December are also popular amongst travellers for their festive sailings.  Whether your first, second, or even third or more Dutch Waterway river cruise, these itineraries are guaranteed to offer a unique experience upon each visit at different times in the year.

Dutch Waterway River Cruise Highlights

Keukenhof

Between the months of March to May, the stunning 80-acre fields of Keunkenhof come into bloom presenting Mother Nature at her very finest.  A staggering 7 million blooms of mostly tulips, but also hyacinths, daffodils, lilies, roses, carnations and irises blanket the fields in a riot of colour. Cycle or walk the pathways of Keukenhof past shimmering lakes, water-gardens and outstanding presentations and arrangements created by the imaginations of multiple artists.

A treat for the whole family, children can enjoy the sights of animals in the animal pasture, climb, slide and scramble in the playground, navigate their way through the maze, or participate in a scavenger hunt.

Ghent

Beginning in 630 as a settlement at the confluence (junction of two rivers) of the Rivers Scheldt and River Leie, and once one of the largest and richest cities of northern Europe in the Late Middle Ages, Ghent is now third largest in Belgium, after Brussels and Antwerp.  Although a lesser-known city, in comparison, Ghent is one notably worthy to be considered a highlight on any itinerary owing to its extremely well-preserved almost fairy-tale like appearance.  Explore the visual treasures of enchanting medieval architecture behind every turn; walk or cycle the carless cobblestoned city streets; or learn of the highlights and history of Ghent as you sail the canals.

As you wander the streets of Ghent, be sure to visit stalls on Groentemarkt square to try Cuberdons, a syrup filled raspberry flavoured candy sold almost exclusively in Belgium due to its short shelf life.  The creation of this candy originated accidently by a Ghent pharmacist who was looking for a way to increase the shelf life of his medicines.

AmaWaterways, APT Travelmarvel, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises, and Riviera Travel all feature itineraries that visit Ghent.
